Sneeze, squirt…

If you are a woman who has had children, you know what I’m referring to. Even though kids are wonderful (see end of post) and it’s hard to hold a grudge, it hardly seems fair that you have to cross your legs when you sneeze!

I used to think that this happened just as we got older but Lorna, my DIL who has 3 kids, says that it can happen sooner than that. Lorna is training to be a doula and she knows things about a woman’s body that I don’t. If you don’t know what a doula is, here’s a quick definition, or click here to go to the DONA International web page.

The word “doula” comes from the ancient Greek meaning “a woman who serves” and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth; or who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period.

Studies have shown that when doulas attend birth, labors are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and they breastfeed more easily.

Anyway—to get back to the sneeze/squirt thing—Lorna said that I should start peeing in the shower. Specifically, that I should squat and pee in the shower. Take a deep breath and get over the ick factor, then click here and read what Heather Dessinger  @mommypotamus has to say.

Lorna said it works. That was a few weeks ago and and do believe that I agree with her, which is all I’m going to say about it :-).

  1. Holy cow, have we been frustrating nature again? I guess sit down toilets are more of a luxury than we thought. If you live in the country like I do, you can go totally natural and squat behind a tree.

  2. Great post, that will help a lot of gals! so hard to digest all the stuff you link to, worrisome is all the advertising on those blogs and such. I’m torn, as marketing was my profession for 30 years. And, I think it’s great that the bloggers are being compensated (by Google adwords I imagine) for their writing. But, it always makes me wonder at the relative truth of the postings… how much is factual, scientifically valid and true, and how much is for “eyeballs”… a bit of a side note there – but…I only had one child, but at 59, I am beginning to see this problem… sure it might get worse, but this is of course worth some trial… just don’t tell the guys… my “hunter gatherers” are such sissies! And I’m on them so hards about hitting the toilet and not the floor! I live with my 84 year old Dad, 65 year old DH, and until just recently had a 6 month residency from No. 1 son, age 28!!!… Back to quilting!

  4. Interesting–think I’ll try peeing in the shower (won’t tell my husband!). I actually had PT for my prolapsed bladder last year & found that all those kegels were not helping–they were making things worse. Last month at my UFO group, another member told me about the Whole Woman website. Christine Kent claims that posture is the problem & we’ve been advised by our exercise class instructors & PTs to do the wrong thing for years–she says pelvic tilts are bad, we need to be rocking our hips back to get that curve in our lower lumbar area. I’ve been practicing this for about a week & it seems to be improving things. I’ve been reading Christine Kent’s book & I’m even more convinced that I don’t want to go the surgery route!

  5. My daughter had a doula when she went into labor with her first child. Wow-the care she got. (Sure wish I had that option years ago.) Doulas are wonderful. My daughter got back rubs, food treats, cream put on her, etc. I am jealous.
