Scenes from the 10-Acre Rock

My husband Steve, the field biologist, knows stuff. And one of the things he knows is how to find the 10-acre rock. It is a 10 acre outcropping of granite in southern Oklahoma, near Tishomingo. There are smaller outcroppings in the area (like the 6-acre rock) that are no longer accessible.

This is not a park, and you can’t exactly find it on a map. Many of the locals don’t even know it’s there… but some do because they obviously party on the rock.

There used to be a quarry here, but it is long gone. The granite is pink, white, and black—very pretty and unusual. There is granite from this spot in the Oklahoma state capital building.

Mother Nature is just full of surprises :-). Here is an close and personal view of a mossy crack in the rock.

  1. Becky Rocks have been a long standing joke in our family. I garden and every garden need a Nice rock. In our local travels I’d say, Oh look a rock. I think He would speed up. After years of this banter I went to my local landscaper and asked Nick if he could place some rock. Pete my delivery guy agreed. I have three in my backyard and one in my front yard. I got my rocks via checkbook. We are all happy. My neighbors now give me smack for the Meteor shower…in only my yard. 🙄

    • I am with you 100%. We have several forklift rocks that we bought from our local rock vendor. I bought rocks for Chris and Lorna for a recent anniversary :-). And we have hauled home a fair number of rocks from this very place.

I do hope that whoever buys our house loves rocks too :-).

  3. That is really amazing. A few of my children and grandchildren just went to Escalante Utah (/grand Staircase) and hiked in the slot canyons, etc. I stayed home, but they sent me pics and it looks amazing. I have never been there, but want to go now. Has your husband ever been there? It is kind of by Bryce canyon and Zions, I think. Yes, the scenery throughout /america is amazing….
