Whirlygigs yesterday, floors today…

Yesterday was the 2nd day of the 2-day class I taught in Duncan, OK. Most of the students brought their pieced arcs for this photo. Cute, huh! Everyone did a great job.

On an applique day everyone stays focused…

Colleen, one of the ladies in class, sent me this photo today. She has been really busy appliqueing the center of the block. Great job!

Duncan was hot and dry. Sherman is hot and dry. It reminds me a lot of the summers when we lived in Tempe, AZ, and I'm not happy that that is true. If you live in a cooler place, enjoy it.

Today it was back to work at mom's house. We set up the paint sprayer and painted cabinet doors (hundreds of them!), louvered doors, and more first thing this morning. Steve had a meeting on campus, I went to Lowe's for supplies, we did some small stuff (got the mirror hung in Christy's bathroom), and after lunch we started laying the flooring.

This is the living room. The Pergo laminate is going down really well, better than when we we put it in at our house. The color is really nice. Mom came by to see it and was very happy. I was the plank cutter and this is the 'rotary cutter' I was using on the flooring:

The blade is big! And more scary when it's moving. I'm very, very careful. I have a friend here who has managed to do real damage to her hands (twice) on a table saw. I stay very focused. It is a very good tool for this job.

We'll be back at it tomorrow. Painting the doors with a 2nd coat with a sprayer and then the floors.

  1. Where do you get the energy in such hot weather? Most people, me included start to melt. Your reno’s look great as do the quilt blocks from your quilt session in Duncan.

  2. Elegant floors deserve some special treatments and protection from scratches and possible damage and I think furniture glides and cups are needed to preserve the quality and beauty of your floors.

  3. Can’t wait until you can go visit your Mom and sister at their new house and sit a spell and drink tea, like civilized people do in hot weather. LoL Your progress is amazing. Judy C in NC

  4. I am very interested in what you are doing at your Mom and sister’s house. We are adding a bedroom and a sewing room (my very own!!!) to our house. We only had bedrooms in the basement (which was finished and furnished very nicely) and it has become a real chore to go up and down the stairs with arthritic knees (mine) and hips (my husband’s). I look at the colors (I know they don’t translate accurately on a computer monitor) to get ideas. I have tentatively decided on a bright yellow with turqoise accents for my sewing room. I jokingly asked my husband if he wanted to paint the bedroom black. He wasn’t amused –men and women have totally different humor sets, don’t they (well, most of the time). I really, really like the laminate floor you just pictured. I’m putting that in the sewing room. I LOVE it. It’s so easy on the feet when you are sewing, with the ‘give’ it has. And, it’s affordable, too. You’re doing a great job (as always)! Love the colors, too.

  5. Becky, you and Steve could start your own rejuvenation company and call it Piece o’Work! Everything in the pictures looks so professional–your mother and sister are very lucky to have such talented family members to help them with this renovation.

  6. Wow, I am impressed at the quality of your work. I wish I was as savvy with my hands as you girls. I had to hire somebody to come and finish our floors and get the carpets cleaned.. Talk about a pain.
