Have you eaten Salvadorian food?

We have a Salvadorian restaurant in Sherman – La Placita. It's in an old gas station and it is a hopping place at lunch time. I went for the first time today with Steve, Chris, and the kids. It was a celebration of being practically done with the fence. It was busy and we had to wait a bit for our order. I tried to be patient, but it's hard when you are light-headed. Chris is a way better person-who-is-waiting:

He refused to smile. Guys are so like that. If you have had boys you know they often put on their 'game face' for photos. But his game face is very nice so that's OK.

Do you see the painting on the wall above Chris and to the left? It was bad, but I grew to really like it. And the lettering on the wall is practically nautical – not at all like the rest of the place. But nice!

Elanor had just gotten a new haircut so I took her picture:

I do wish I photographed half as well as my granddaughter! Jack decided he needed a picture of his hair too:

Don't you love the curls? Lunch finally came. We had pupusas – think of a pita that is made from corn meal stuffed with cheese and/or beans and/or meat, etc. They make everything on site and my oh my it's really good. And inexpensive.

I got the internet to work at mom and Christy's. It's nice to be connected – in so many ways.

  1. I, for one, am very interested to see the finished inside of your Mom’s house. The “after” shots… Kitchen counters, dish towels, furniture… All done. Chris/you all did an awesome job with the fence. In fact, I’m very much in awe of the massive amount of work you all did in such a short time especially during the heat you’ve had in TX this summer. Congratulations on finishing up. It has been an inspiration to “watch.”

  2. My niece’s husband is Salvadoran, and they used to live near a great little specialty restaurant. I love papusas! (and trying any food from a different culture) Glad to see you got a little down time, even if it was just for a meal!

  3. I’ve been reading your blog for a while, and I once took a class from you at the quilt show in Williamsburg. I have lived in and renovated two old houses (built in the 20’s), and I have to say that you are the hardest and fastest working people I have ever seen. You must be exhausted! I am so impressed, and I know your mom and sister will truly enjoy their new space.

  4. I hope you enjoyed the Salvadorean food. The place looks charming, and I love your family photos, too! We have a Salvadorean/Mexican restaurant here called “Amelia’s” – yes, there is an Amelia, mostly retired now – worked from about age 8. Now the family runs the restaurant. I like pupusas but some of the special plates are even better, like the Salvadorean chili relleno with pork and vegetable filling, seved in a large bowl, in a kind of rich, seasoned gravy, with tortillas, rice and beans on the side.
The restaurant used to have year-round Christmas decor, and still has two beautiful murals showing an idealized version of village life. If you visit SF Bay Area, I will take you there!
