I’m leaving… on a jet plane!

I am leaving at the crack of way before dawn on Thursday to go to Princeville, HI, which is on the north side of the island of Kauai. I'm teaching this weekend for the No Nene Quilters. On Saturday Steve, our granddaughter, Elanor, and her BFF, Lola, will join me. Steve and I will be entertaining two 9-year-old girls for the week of spring break. I know – I have a really tough life!

I have been scrambling to get everything that needs doing, done, before I go. You may have gotten an eNewsletter today – that was on my list. I've been working on our taxes (ours, Mom's, Christy's). And, in between everything else, I've been working on the manuscript for the next book. Somewhere in there I've gotten some sewing done. I'm sharing this in the hopes that you'll forgive me for not getting more posts up lately.

For today, I just have to share this:

GlitterPantsMartha

All I could think of was 'Glitter Pants Martha' β€” the way I think of 'Evening Gown Barbie.' What was she thinking? Or more to the point, what was the person who dressed her for this ad thinking?

When I was in Australia a year or so ago, I heard of a website (that I never found) called 'leggings are not pants.' I believe that these are words for anyone over the age of 50 to keep in mind. And who amoung you would pair those gold glitter leggings with that blue shirt? Or is it just me that would never do that?

The next time I ask Steve if an outfit 1) goes together or 2) if it makes me look fat, I am going to remember this photo. A paid professional probably told Martha that she looked great in this outfit. I hate to put that much pressure on my darling husband.

So now I'm going to get back to work…

FYI – Take a moment and look at that ad. Where do your eyes go? Where do they stay? Mine go to the blue shirt, and even when I look at other parts of the ad, they go back to the blue shirt. I would think that Macy's wants your eyes to focus more on those pots balanced in mid-air.

Why do your eyes go to the blue shirt? It is the highest contrasting object on the page, it's big, and it is dead center. When you are making quilts, keep in mind that this kind of contrast works the same way in your quilts. Used wisely, you can use this technique to make people see what you want them to see in your quilts.

  1. Becky ~ I hope the weather clears up for you – right now Kauai is a declared disaster area on account of the heavy rains and flooding! My folks who live in Lihue can’t even drive as far as Kapa’a….but it could clear up real fast for you! Hopefully! And I AM jealous!

  2. I often think that if I had the figure I would wear whatever I wanted for as long as I wanted BUT this just goes to prove one of my favourite sayings.
Just cause it fits, does not mean it looks good!!
No really good luck to her, I am only jealous :}P
Mind you I don’t think this outfit “works”. The blouse is too predominant & I think it clashes with the pants but I believe that is the new “Look” for the season.
    Have fun on Kauai.

  4. I like the leggings and I like the shirt its those worn out shoes maybe if they put her in Turquois shoes it would have come together.
I honestly have to say she is in great shape for her age! I wish I would look that good

  5. The model in Martha told her this was a cool “magic feeling” outfit. Yes, it is awful.
Does she care what we think……NO.
That being said I always make sure my backside is cover :0)
Have a wonderful time in Kauai, I loved it last time I was there. I hope you have time for some hikes…the island is just amazing for it’s natural beauty.

  6. Martha has terrible taste in clothes and has for a long time! I liked her years and years ago when she wore blue jean shirts and more down to earth things (like I wear!). And on the topic of Quinn, I am so sorry about her as well. I have not actually seen the episode yet, we’re behind, but I was watching ET the other night and before I knew it they showed the crash…I was very put out. I can’t see how she will survive it and if she does, she should have some major injuries….. I wish TV shows wouldn’t always feel the need to kill off their characters!!!

  7. Her knees look fat. I am a proponent of just because it fits doesn’t mean it looks good as well. Lets all dress our age.

  8. Yes, the rains were torrential in Hawaii. Lots of flooding and debris to clean up. Be careful and best wishes for a safe trip.

  9. Well, I don’t like the glitter pants. They definitely don’t “go” with the blue shirt. If she had on jeans or a dressy pair of pants in another color, like a medium gray, it might work. I’m not a fashionista; I wear what feels comfortable and what I can afford. But this? For someone who can buy whatever she wants to wear — just a disaster. She should fire her dresser! Or at least the dresser for this ad.
Becky, I can’t believe you are apologizing again! Don’t! Family and things required for them are first on all our lists; at least I think they are or should be. I can cope with fewer blogs if your ideas are new and relevant. You can’t do that if you have conflict in your life. Taking care of yourself and family first is definitely the thing that helps keep conflict at a minimum.

  10. Ive been using TurboTax for years. Love it! But even with TurboTax it takes time to work up 3 returns – plus states. However, I finished moms and Christys last night. Now I just have ours to do when I get home.

  11. I noticed her knees first too. I understand the “magic” of the pants. Everyone knows magic sparkles, right?!
It just brings to mind the saying,
“Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.”
    Hope you’re enjoying Hawaii.
