Another one bites the dust…

I am death on irons. I treat them well… I didn't even drop the Reliable! Sad to say, it was not reliable for me. It wimpered and died a few days ago.

Irons

I borrowed Mom's old Sunbeam and so far it's working well. I bought her a new iron and I am going to use her old one until it, too, goes to iron heaven. Heat and steam, that's all I ask for.

In other news, Mom's arm is better-ish. The swelling is down and she's moving around about like normal but the wound itself is infected and she's going to have to have wound care for it. Thank goodness we have a good facility for that here in Sherman!

Taz (the dog that bit her) is coming home on Thursday. Mom misses him. I would happily find a new home for him (or try to) but she wants him back so there you go.

The little snert likes to hide under the bed and that's a real problem for Mom, so we came up with a solution. Steve built a sort of box out of 1×6 pine boards that now sits under her bed. It's a bit recessed so that Mom doesn't whack her toes on it but it will prevent Taz from being able to get out of reach.

He built a taller one for Christy's old bed too!

UnderBed-2

Simple, inexpensive and it should work. If only I could find an iron that I could say the same thing about.

  1. Ugh, I have the same reliable iron, and hate it! I wish it would die like yours did, then I could justify getting a new one!! Hope your mom heals quickly with the wound care…..

  2. Steve is clever and handy! Great idea. As for irons, you are the 2nd blog I’ve read that has had a “Reliable” bite the dust prematurely. I always end up getting inexpensive irons from Walmart. I have a bad habit of knocking them onto the floor. And like you all I want is heat and steam and lots of it. Good luck with the dog (I’m with you on this one.)

  3. How very clever on the bed boxes. I do hope your Mom and Taz get along again. I know I would miss my companion puppy but would be a bit leary if he ever bit me even by accident. (Puppy finger chewing doesn’t count!)

  4. Good I’ll check that iron off my list. Stay away from the Oliso – my friend sent hers back 3 times and asked for a refund, which they did give her. I tried 2 of the Rowenta Steam Generators. When water started pouring out of the on/off switch and every other crevice that was it. Back it went. It blew in 74 days. I do quilt nearly everyday. I’m trying out a Rowenta professional, so far so good. I’m buying spring water for it, since I have salt water softened water and hard water if it’s not. I loved the B&D with the electronic face, but the auto turn off every 10 minutes got too annoying. I have a Sunbeam with a 30-minute shut off that isn’t too bad, but the steam holes are so big they get caught when you are just trying to press. I have no idea why it’s hard to find a good iron these days.

  5. I’ve totally given up on the expensive irons due to all of the above problems. Now I just buy an inexpensive steam one (Sunbeam, Black & Decker) and when it dies I have no problem replacing it. Less financial guilt. Been trying to convince my handy husband to design a good iron when he retires!

  6. Since my Rowenta died after 20 years of faithful, continuous service — I have been on the hunt for a GOOD iron. Sorry to hear that Reliable did not live up to its name as I recently “invested”. EuroPro gnerates excellent heat and steam BUT is essentially a pressure cooker and must be used or vented every ten minutes which makes it tricky for quilters to use.
What happened to the quality of Rowenta irons? That is what I would like to know.

  7. I love my Rowenta. I got it on sale for 1/2 off and have loved it ever since. I’m not sure which model it is (I’m at work on break), but I know it heats up well and steams more than I could ever ask for. I’ve had it for >4 years and it’s been great so far. I wonder if irons are like cars and you need to ask what day of the week it was made, then avoid Mondays and Fridays? Don’t know, but I know that it’s hard to find a great one for less than $150. Becky, I’m so glad your mother and you have wound care available; it’s invaluable! I’m an RN and I know that taking care of some wounds is very tricky and time-consuming. You are lucky to have this service near you. I’m with you on the dog. I’ve got two mini Schnauzers and if they ever started biting, I wouldn’t hesitate to do something about it, whether it was re-training, a muzzle or the drastic steps you can take. I wouldn’t want to, but would rather than have someone bit and have permanent scars, etc. The old wives tail (pun intended) is that a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a humans — isn’t so! A dog’s mouth is dirtier than most humans. I don’t know if you’ve watched what they do after going to the “potty”, but I have and that is not clean! Well, I’ve run on again. Sorry! But wanted to fill you in on that.
