(Rainy) Day 14…

We need rain, as does much of the country. Our part of Texas is not in as dire need of rain as are other areas but we need rain. But NOT NOW! Except that it did rain today and I could not enjoy it because I was supposed to paint.

I showed up to paint an hour later than planned and decided it that was too wet. I went home and worked for an hour or so and then it cleared off. The radar said the rain was over. I went back and painted and DARN IT – it started raining again!

Steve and Chris had also started work and had to get themselves and the power tools off of the roof. It cleared off after lunch and the guys went back to work.

The deck had been attached to the old wood siding on the garage. Not a good thing. It now floats next to the garage. They also got the siding off of this wall all way up to the peak. They also got all of the old siding and facing boards off this (last) wall.

I could not help myself, I had to try again – even though I had the radio interview this afternoon. All I had to do was talk on the phone and I figured it didn't matter where I was or what I was wearing. I told Mom I was going to paint and she said "Isn't it too humid?" I ignored these words of wisdom and went to paint.

This wall is subtly different. If you look back at Day 11 you won't see that very long facing board above the garage doors. We all decided that the join of the Hardie panels needed to be covered. I painted the facing strip in the wall color and did manage to get two coats on it.

I got one coat of paint on this wall and I decided that mom was correct. I was afraid the paint would get gummy if I did any more. And I was dripping with sweat. It was swampy.

So I went home and showered (again) and got ready to be interviewed by Pat Sloan. I hope you enjoyed the interview! I need to go in a listen to Tula Pink.

There is more rain in the forecast. Oh my. I suppose I should resign myself to tomorrow off. I hope that the guys find a clear window to finish all the walls. Then I could get it all done in one day!

  1. I enjoyed the radio interview very much. Forgot until it was over by a couple of hours but pulled it right up online. I’ve been following the house work you are doing and wondered if the interview was “live” and it was! The house shows quite an improvement, and really enjoyed the interview. Funny that you and Linda have never lived in the same town. Also will be looking forward to more videos on the website.

  2. Cheer up, Becky! Rainy days are a bummer for paintwork because they may wash out the new paint. But as long as the first coat of paint has been allowed to dry thoroughly, you don’t have to worry about the paint getting washed away. Anyway, what will Steve and Chris do to your old siding?

  3. Yes, cheer up, Becky! The paint job looks like it was done by a professional. 🙂 I’m pretty sure you’ll take good care of it, as you yourself had some difficulty painting that one. You just have to clean and dry it every day, so that molds and/or mildew won’t be able to thrive, okay?

  4. Why don’t you install a roof on that deck, so that it won’t get wet whenever it rains? As Kip said, mold and mildew may thrive on the wood, as it is exposed to heat and rain. If that happens, you will have to start all over again with the painting, or worse, replace it altogether. Is prevention not preferable over having to pay and do it all over again?

  5. There used to be a roof there but its problematic to put a new one in. It could be done but would require time and money that we dont have right now. If the kids end up staying in that house after Chris gets out of grad school, then it will definitely get a roof. If not, it will be the next owners issue.
Our next task is to put in more windows…

  6. I must applaud you for doing a great job in managing the roof and other parts of your house despite the rainy day (and your busy schedule). These two hard working guys are also impressive for not letting their job be affected by the weather, business as usual! =) and hey, I like the color combination! It’s kinda refreshing, and it looks like the paint’s quality won’t fade for years!

  7. Rain comes inevitably, especially when you least expect it. Sometimes, it even pours hard. I guess we should just be ready always, so we can go on through life. I think you just have to equip your house with sturdy roofing and walls so you don’t have to worry about the rain coming again.

  8. I’m glad that you got the painting done even though it rained. I love how you painted your garage. However, I don’t see any piping that would send the water from up the roof down to the spout. Your roof would be damaged in no time if you don’t put up a piping system to drain the water from your roof.

  9. Amazingly enough, this house is better without the gutters. The trees drop so much debris that the gutters and downspouts clog too fast to keep up with. It caused all sorts of problems that are now better. We did put rock on the ground where the water hits it to keep the foundation dry.
