The phone was ringing as I clicked to post my most recent post. It was Elanor saying to come quick, Bear was coming. In the 8 minutes it took for us to drive over to Chris and Lorna's, Bear was born. No midwife, just Chris and Judy, who caught the baby – and Lorna! Judy is now an old hand at this AND her name will be on another birth certificate! Way to go Judy!
I have to say that using a midwife was absolutely the best thing for Lorna – even if the midwife was late to the actual show. The prenatal care was excellent. Judy, Lorna and Chris handled the actual birth very well. Once the doula and midwife arrived they took over. It was calm and normal and very, very nice – better than my experiences in a hospital. And Lorna tells me that the follow-up care is also very good.
Using a midwife is not for everyone and if there had been an emergency, it could have been bad. But it was all normal and knowing how fast Lorna goes from not much going on to having a baby – this was great for her.
We all got to hold the baby. There may be a photo of me with him later.
Here's Steve:
Chris pointed out that Bear has his Uncle Jeff's toes! He can not only curl and grab with his toes – he can spread them way wide.
So, here he is, all 8 lbs 13 oz, Moses Beren Goldsmith!

Congrats! What a beautiful addition to your family!
He’s so sweet!

Congratulations!!! Wow 8-13, and no drugs…I’m impressed. Glad things worked out so well for Lorna. Like you said, midwife/home birth is not for everyone, and I am SO thankful I was in the hospital when there WAS an emergency with my daughter. To each his own. Blessings to all of you! (and so happy you didnt miss it!)

Wow! Congrats to all. I’m glad Chris was home for the birth. I remember having a friend back in my childbearing days who had “Precipitous” (I’m not exactly sure of the spelling) births, which means her babies came extremely fast. She barely made it to the hospital for the 2nd baby. I suggested she might want to consider a home birth for #3, so at least they would be prepared to have the baby there. She wasn’t interested in doing it that way at 1st, but then decided to do a home birth a few months before the new one was born–good thing–that baby came faster than ever, & she never would have made it to the hospital. Better at home than on the road!

How happy you must be! I was thinking about your new little bear and thought of a wonderful gift for him. Do you know The Little Bear books by Else Minarik? They are wonderfully illustrated by Maurice Sendak. I don’t think I read them as a child, but I had them in my Second Grade classroom as a teacher. A set of those would be fun for baby and parents alike!
