Thanks for the link back to the videos on hand piecing and Jen’s template. Seriously, I think a visit to a local quilt shop might be just what you need. I did that back in 2013 while visiting my sister who was recovering from surgery. I started with a couple of packets of English paper pieces and a bundle of 5″ squares, and I am STILL working on that double diamond queen size quilt. It is my “travel project”. At the time I bought my bundle of squares, I had no idea of the pattern I would use, I just stitched a lot of hexies. The pattern found me a year or two later. 😉 Think of the fun Hawaiian fabrics you might find.
