Recovering chairs…

Or I should say, re-covering chairs. I put new upholstery on my dining room chairs not that long ago. I used Scotch Guard on the chairs but it was no match for the abuse that we apparently dish out. There were stains all over the chair seats and backs and I couldn't take it any more.

I ordered a roll of laminated fabric from the Good Fortune collection from Moda. This print is perfect in the room and the vinyl coating on the fabric wipes clean. Steve removed the staples for me (which is a hard job) at a rate of one a day. I re-covered the chairs at the same pace.

Laminated fabric does not stretch so the chair backs are not as smooth as they were before but I can handle that better than the stains. The fabric doesn't feel or look too plastic-y.

I had enough left over to cover the seats of the chairs in the breakfast room as well. I hadn't realized how dirty the previous fabric was until I took it off. Ick.

  1. I love that laminated fabric. I made myself a lunch sack to take to work from it. My girls liked it so much they asked for one also, so (having enough fabric) I made them one. You chairs look really good! You always do such a nice job at these home projects. I really like what you do.

  2. Your chairs look wonderful. I love that fabric. Tip for next time…if the chair back wrinkles bother you..just add a light batting to the chair back first…the batting kind of fills out the wrinkles. Not so much batting that it is puffy…just light like you would use for a table cloth.

  3. Good to know. I have to say, though, that these chair backs are no fun to recover. I think they are going to stay the way they are for a long, long time. But next time Ill add some batting.

  4. How did you cover the backs of the dinning room chairs? I have the same chairs and can’t decide how or where to star on the backs. I’m thinking of a slip cover type over but I’m not sure on how much easement to have. I don’t want the fabric to pucker or sag after I cover them. Any Ideas?

    • If they are really the same chair, look on the sides for the 2 screws that hold the back of the chair in place. They may be covered by wood hole-covers. I had to break those little round wood plugs and was not able to replace them but no one ever notices. >
