It’s a crumb-y giveaway!

So, about the crumbs in the post title… I subscribe to Ami Simms’ newsletter and a little while ago she wrote about a student, Megan Null, who was making ‘crumb quilts’. Megan let Ami film her, and her video says it all:

I googled crumb quilts and, who knew! There are pages of crumb quilts! It looks to me like crumb quilts started with Bonnie Hunter and have now taken on a life of their own. I have been too busy writing the color book to have noticed crumb quilts. Sigh.

Anyway, back to Ami. She has issued a 2014 Crumb Quilt Challenge! I generated a lot of lovely, colorful scraps when I was sewing for the color book and for a few days I thought I would start my own crumb quilt(s). I looked at the pile lovingly… and then I admitted to myself that this is not something I am going to do. My pile of crumbs could become your very own crumb quilt!

Everything in the box is pre-washed cotton—except for one piece of a silky polyester that is obviously not cotton. I was going to throw it away but thought maybe the winner would love it. There are little pieces and bigger pieces, strips, triangles, and other shapes.

  22. Welcome to your new blog. Hope it all goes smoothly. I can’t bear to throw away little scraps – I paid for them after all! But I don’t often do anything with them either. Crumb quilts could just be the answer. And I do like scrappy quilts.

  30. So clever. I have used pieces on a white block to create what Amanda Nyberg calls Tickertape. It is just putting a piece of white fabric and putting batting and backing with it and then quilting scraps on the top. It is very colorful and fun.

      I’ve been working on the new blog and have uploaded a couple of different ways for you to sign up to follow the blog. It occurs to me that you may not have seen it if you are looking at the blog on your phone. If that’s the case, scroll way down. The right side column would start at the end of several blog posts. If you are on a tablet, it might be the same thing. On a full screen, the options are in the top of the right column.

  36. Just so you know, If I did win the crumbs I most likely would NOT stuff them into the fleece pillow for the humane society but would actually use them for a quilt! How fun would that be? 🙂

  41. I would love to have your crumbs, I have been a fan for years. I first saw you on Alex Anderson’s quilt show back in the 90s (oops, was it that long ago?) I used to come everyday for lunch so that I could see her show.

  46. I have never made a crumb quilt … I had to look it up on Bonnie’s blog. It looks like a fun way to use up scraps, almost like a miniature crazy quilt. Thanks for the giveaway!
