The Magical Unicorn pattern is scheduled for release in August – yay!!! I’ve already had requests for kits and I’m working on it but I need to know what sort of kit you would like.
There are two block sizes in the pattern (35″ x 35″ and 50″ x 50″). This quilt has the 35″ x 35″ block and 5″ wide borders making the finished quilt 45″ x 45″. The block is constructed on a white base layer that can be cut away after the shapes are sewn down. I machine appliquéd my quilt but you could hand appliqué if you prefer.
If I was buying a kit for this quilt, I would want larger pieces of fabric to work from. There would be fat quarters plus other pieces both bigger and smaller. These cuts would be big enough to allow for shrinkage for those (like me) who always prewash. There would be leftover fabric because of the scrappy nature of this quilt.
The unicorn and flower appliqué shapes could come as fabric pieces OR they could be laser-cut and ready to fuse. The downside to fusing is that the base layer cannot be cut away and the quilt will be a bit heavier.
So my question to you is, what kind of Magical Unicorn kit would you buy? I thank you in advance for letting me know your thoughts.
Your unicorn is to die for, simply precious. I would love the larger one, if it were me. Thanks for asking, Becky.

OK. If it’s the larger one, would you want to fuse the shapes or not?

No! I’d want to needle-turn everything. And, here’s a question for you, Becky. I always give pattern designers full credit when I make something. If I made a unicorn quilt to sell, and gave you credit, could I really sell it?

Technically, no. You would have to have licensed the design to do that. But lets say you make one quilt for your friend for her to give to her daughter. I can’t see anything wrong with you being reimbursed for that. But if you make unicorn quilts and sell them on etsy (or elsewhere), you would need a license. It’s not impossible to get a license and if you want to pursue that I can put you in touch with my publisher who deals with those questions.
Thanks for asking!

I would like the larger one and I would like to fuse and maybe make another one hand applique.
I also would like the laser cut if I fuse.

Wonderful quilt!! I don’t care for fusible, so would prefer larger fabric pieces so I could go with my choice of applique methods.

The 45″ X 45 would be perfect and the laser cut pieces would be so much easier. This finished quilt would be a gift to my great granddaughter as a wall hanging so the extra weight is not a problem.

I would want to needle turn. The larger size would be better.

My granddaughter loves unicorns so I would love to make this for her. I would fuse mine and the smaller size would be perfect to hang on her bedroom wall.

You have 2 great ideas why not both? I personally like choosing my own colors and like a little bit bigger pieces, but both gives us both worlds.

This is just a question I don’t know much about cut away, but doesn’t that weaken the quilt?

I would like the larger size and larger pieces of fabric for the applique. Thanks Judy
