Broken pieces…

My mom loved Lladdro figurines and she had several. I kept two, one of which I gave her a long time ago. Today, it got broken. I made a loud noise at just the wrong time and Belle (the cat) jumped too close to it and down it went. Boom, crash, done.

I could glue the pieces together but it’s just not the same. I thought about replacing it but decided that that’s not the same either. Plus, I couldn’t find another one just like this online.

So, I did a mom-like thing and stuck her in a flower pot. Her one remaining leg is keeping her in place.

The cactus is from one that was in mom’s kitchen window most of my life. It got big, I ended up with it and nearly killed it. Mom got these bits growing in that pot (that she insisted on painting green) in her last year of life. I am doing my best to not to kill this cactus.

The pot sits on the window sill above my Bernina. I actually like the figure better in the pot than I did where it was, next to my bed. That’s good because this is where she’s going to stay.

Wednesday Giveaway

Diane H. has won a Pendant Thread Cutter made by Clover. You can put it on a cord and wear it which is nice for on the go sewing. But you can also stick it in a spool and use it the cut apart chain-pieced units. It’s a twofer (two uses for the price of one!).

I’ll be back next Wednesday with another Giveaway. Happy stitching!

Wednesday Giveaway

Barbara J. is this week’s lucky winner. She will receive a box of Clover’s 3/4″ pins. They are one of the 3 pins I use for applique, along with the 1/2″ Sequin Pins and the Smaller Perfect Pins. And it isn’t glamorous, but I like to use these in in my design wall. They are big enough to do the job without being obtrusive.

Show and tell…

Rachel Krezer sent me this photo of her quilt, made for her soon-to-arrive great niece, Margaret Grace.

She used our Whimsical Designs coloring book #1 to create her quilt. She scanned the pictures into her Bernina V8 software, used the applique feature to convert it to machine applique, then used her Bernina 880 to do the actual work.

I don’t do this sort of machine applique so I have to say that this sounds pretty impressive :-). Well done, Rachel! Margaret is one lucky little lady.

Celebrating Mom…

My mom would have been 87 yesterday and we celebrated the event by going out to lunch at one of her favorite places… Mooyah! We had burgers, fries, and shakes!

Mom went to Mooyah with Lorna and the kids, and Carla pretty often. That was their thing to do. This was my first trip and it makes me wonder why I wasn’t with them before. Dang!

I knew mom would want all of her friends to celebrate too, so I took a big sheet cake (baked by Mom’s Bakery here in Sherman) to Preston Place, the assisted living center where mom lived. I ordered a white cake with chocolate frosting decorated with flowers. I asked them to put a flower on every piece… I call this the ‘Everybody gets a flower!’ cake…

Mom’s Bakery did such a great job! I wish I had thought of this years ago because my mom would have loved this cake. I thought they would put the same flower on each piece but they were way more creative than that. Way to go, Mom’s!

While I was at Preston Place delivering the cake, I visited the courtyard to see my mom’s St Francis statue ‘display’. I’ll never forget setting this up, with Steve and I moving St. Francis here and there, and putting the metal flowers in just the right place. Mom loved the metal flowers. I thought they were a little over the top but I have to admit that they are smile inducing.

The little golfing monkey was still there, off to the side. Mom liked concrete critters and some of hers ended up in my yard… aturtle, pig, bird, and a rabbit with a broken ear. The big lion is at Chris and Lorna’s. However, only the monkey is playing a sport :-).

Carla had a picture of mom on her phone that she shared with me. It was from the last time mom got her hair done…

Yup, that’s my mom. The smile is right there, about to happen. There’s a twinkle in her eye, and her hair looks really nice :-). We all miss her, but we remember her and that keeps her with us, every day.

Wednesday Giveaway

Michelle B. is this week’s winner! She will receive a package of Karen Kay Buckley’s Bigger Perfect Circles. I usually trace around them for needleturn applique. Sometimes I follow the included instructions and use them for machine applique.
