Carol Meier sent this photo of her completed version of my “Birds in Toyland” pattern. I love it! She said:

Thank you for a fun pattern! It was fun to make, & looks great on our living room wall.

One of the most fun things for me is seeing how others color their quilts and arrange the blocks. Carol used nice, brights lights in her border and those colors make a nice outer edge to the quilt.

Show and Tell: Welcome to the North Pole

Thank you to Kari Hawkins, for sharing your wonderful quilt with us! I love the quilt and the fact that you made it 24 years ago and it is still a holiday favorite. Well done!


Thought you might like to see a few photos of my version of the North Pole quilt. I made it in 2000 as part of our local quilt guild’s Challenge. The Challenge was to make a quilt with fabric change, fabric manipulation and fabric embellishments. This quilt allowed me to do all three just fine!

It also placed in our quilt show the next year. 

My family and friends enjoy seeing this quilt every year during Christmas. It is often put on display at our guild’s Christmas party. I am a member of Heritage Quilters of Huntsville and enjoy making Piece O’ Cake quilts.

Birds in Toyland Show and Tell…

Shirley Ratliff took my Birds in Toyland class, online on Creative Spark and she just finished her quilt! It’s wonderful! Shirley made changes to the original pattern that work great in her quilt AND she finished in time for the holidays!

Shirley wrote:

Had sew much fun making this quilt! Changed it up a bit because I wanted to quilt in the border lights. Love these little birdies! Thanks for your kind words about my quilt. You gave me the confidence to tackle this project and have fun doing it!

Show and tell: A Sampling of Santas

Cynthia Helton sent photos of this quilt that her mom, Shirley Ray Hatley Alford, started in 1995. Shirley passed away in July, 2007. Cynthia, thank you for sharing her quilt with us, I know you all must treasure it.

I remember Shirley! She was in my North Pole class at Sharon’s Quilt Depot way back in 1995 when the book, A Sampling of Santas, was new. Shirley was a lovely woman and I have a smile on my face when I remember her.

This is excerpted from the very well-written documentation patch:

Shirley hand appliqued the blocks and machine pieced them together. As her health began to decline due to breast cancer, Shirley invited Corinne Lageose to finish the hand quilting. Carolyn MIller sewed on the outer binding by hand. And Shirley’s daughter, Cynthia Rae Alford Helton sewed on the red berry buttons and other embellishments. This quilt was lovingly finished by Cynthia while sitting at the bedside of Shirley in July, 2007. This is Shirley’s Masterpiece!
