North Pole Show and Tell…

Regina Grewe sent me these photos of her Welcome to the North Pole quilt. Isn’t it lovely! Well done, Regina and thank you for sharing it with us!

She said: “Finished in 2015, made with a little help from my friends a lot of buttons and embellishment was added. It’s a family treasure now.”

This book was first published in 1997 and it is still one of my favorite quilts. The ebook is available here: https://pieceocake.com/collections/christmas-patterns-books/products/welcome-back-to-the-north-pole-digital-download-ebook

Show and tell… North Pole Runner!

Many thanks to Lis, who emailed this week to say that she hasn’t started on the Welcome Back To The North Pole quilt yet, but she is making a wall hanging using the table runner design and she shared her progress with me.  It’s not layered and quilted yet. She used needle turn appliqué, reverse needle turn appliqué, mola and broidery perse techniques and she has a bird button to go on the roof.

Don’t you love the batik LIs used in the background?! That dark swirly blue is perfect behind the rest of the applique. Well done Lis and thank you for sharing!

Steve’s Birds Show and Tell…

Shoshana Vogel sent me this photo of her finished quilt. She wrote:

I finally finished and photographed my Steve’s Birds quilt and thought you would like to see it. thank you so much, i loved every minute of working on this one. i made it to hang in a specific space in our home so i had to play around with the final layout.

The birds look great and stand out on their blocks. You did a great job of setting them together to fit your space. And I love the texture of the sashing fabric and the way it sets the blocks apart without overpowering them. I don’t know if this quilt will end up in this space, but it does look really good against the dark books. Well done, Shoshana, and thank you for sharing!

Show and tell: Steve’s Birds

Marie Szlachtianshyn sent a photo of her Steve’s Birds blocks to date. They are wonderful! I’m glad that you are enjoying sewing the birds. It is true that the little feet and eyes can be a challenge—but you are handling that challenge very well!

Look close and you can see that Marie’s blocks are not sewn together yet. If you are following my layout, you can’t sew them all together yet because this is not a quilt that sets together in rows. That’s not a bad thing! Try out sashing ideas as the blocks accumulate but know that, as you make more blocks, your idea of what is the best sashing fabric may change.

Aunt Millie’s Garden show and tell, continued…

Diane Kirwan sent this photo of her quilt, saying: “I so enjoyed make it Aunt Millie.  I felt it deserved custom quilting.”

I love the cool, calm, collected colors that Diane put together. I do not usually have this much self-restraint which makes me appreciate it even more 🤣.

This is Cathy Lucas’s Aunt Millie’s Garden quilt.

Cathy’s color palette includes all the colors in a thoughtful and balanced layout. Purple sashing adds visual unity to the quilt as a whole. Cathy writes:

Here is my version of Aunt Millie’s Garden. I loved making this quilt and seeing other people’s interpretations. My quilt won a blue ribbon earlier this year at our Pride of the Prairie Quilt Guild show. Your appliqué patterns are among my favorite and I’ve made several over the years.  Thanks for being here and being you.

It’s fun to see these quilts together. Each is wonderful in its own way. Thank you, Diane and Cathy, for sharing your quilts with us!

Aunt Millie’s Garden show and tell…

In my recent newsletter, I invited you all to send photos of your Aunt Millie’s Garden quilt. Nancy Bradford responded right away. Her quilt is so happy :-)! And I really like the strips in the top and bottom borders that lead your eye to the applique blocks. Nancy wrote:

My version of Aunt Millie’s Garden won a 1st Place and Best of Show at the 2013 Golden Needles Quilt Guild Show in Conroe, Texas.  I collected the fabrics while on a trip to visit a quilting friend in Minnesota with other quilting friends.

Amy Mitchell sent in the following photo of her Aunt Millie quilt top. The colors sing on top of the deep chocolate brown. And using 9 blocks instead of 12 make a very nice square quilt.

It’s nice that Nancy and Amy shared their quilts at nearly the same time because it’s great to see how the light and dark backgrounds change the look of the quilt. Both are lovely, but they are also very different. I will date myself and say… Cool!

Thank you, Nancy and Amy, for sharing your quilts with us. Happy stitching.
