Show and tell…

Sharon Rutledge emailed this story to me a few days ago. She wrote:

“Last night I spent some time with my grandkids. My granddaughter brought out some of her baby dolls and some of her baby doll blankets. This blanket is one I made from scraps that I had. It’s about 16×20. I haven’t seen this for awhile so it was nice to see it was still in service.”

“After searching in her closet I also found the quilt that I made for her about 6 years ago.”

I love both quilts. The subtle piecing of the background sets off the flowers and borders so well. And the doll quilt is wonderful—and both look like they have been well loved. Thank you, Sharon, for sharing!

Marty Anderson sent me an email with this story:

I am recovering some very old chairs that belonged to my grandmother, then my aunt and uncle. After they floated down the Guadalupe River in a flood, my aunt and uncle, then in their late 80’s gave them to me.  I am finally recovering the chairs.  I was amazed to find that the padding in the chairs were an old quilt that had been cut up.  Hand pieced and hand quilted I might add.  I would guess my grandmother did this.  She was a quilter.  I remember her frame that hung from the ceiling.  She loved bright colors, red especially.  I would have been pretty proud to have made this quilt with none of the points cut off!

The red fabric looks worn, like it was washed and used a lot. The quilt could also have been stained before being cut up and used in the chair seat. I think this shows that Marty’s grandmother was a frugal and practical woman :-).

Louann Young sent me these pictures of her finished quilt. Here’s what she said:

I finally got it hung on our bedroom wall today. I wish I could take credit for the gorgeous machine quilting, but that was done by Debbie Ator of Dumont, Colorado. I enjoyed making this quilt so much and found your pattern extremely easy to follow. I know I will do another one day.

I love the color combination! Well done Louann, and Debbie!

Nancy Caine recently finished her Hexie Garden Quilt—isn’t it great! She says that it was a fun quilt to make!

Nancy changed the quilt top layout. I really like the way the blocks form a big hexie flower and the way it glows against the dark background. She used the other two blocks which are not in the quilt as table toppers. Well done, Nancy and thank you for sharing!

Sharon Rutledge sent me this photo of her quilt and her story about it.

This quilt is from one of my favorite Piece O’ Cake books. I see various quilts from the past shown on your sight and it dawned on me that I have one too. Duh! It’s not the fanciest one but it’s my personal favorite.  I had fun making this quilt and quilting it myself. Quilting is not my biggest talent. I was able to handle this one. I’m now working on Leaves and Strings  which is similar.

Sharon, I think you have plenty of quilting talent! Your quilt is lovely and I thank you for sharing it with us.

This quilt, Gathering Leaves, is in our ebook, Once Upon A Season.

Barb Glaeser sent this picture of her recently finished Tree of Life quilt.

Here is the story behind the quilt:

I loved the project and it traveled many places with me over the years. I did make a few design additions. I added a butterfly because my right side wound up curving out too far and leaving a void, when I washed it after doing the quilting one of the red wool flower centers bled, so we had to have bullion bumble bees! Since it is the tree of life I thought this was appropriate!
My daughter decided she like the tree of life quilt but wanted it smaller to hang in a certain place in her home (which she no longer lives in!!). I decided to make it the size of the pattern in the book (i.e. not enlarge at all). This was a 5 year 10 month on/off project (I know because I started when my grandson was born and finished last month and he turned 6 yesterday!).
It finished at 36 x 36.

I love the way Barb made this quilt her own. Well done and thank you for sharing!
